Ha Noi (VNA 10/01/2005) - Typhoon Damrey, which struck on Sept. 26 and 27, left 68 persons dead or missing and 22 injured, 4,522 houses destroyed and 95,134 others submerged, according to the Central Committee for Storm and Flood Control.
A total of 255,680 cubic metres of earth and rock on road surfaces were swept away, 301,134 ha of rice and subsidiary crops were destroyed and 21,944 shrimp and fish breeding pools were damaged.
Losses caused by the storm are estimated at 3,393 billion VND. Storm-hit localities have made proposals to the Committee to finance 1,224 billion VND in order to overcome the aftermath.
Northern mountainous Yen Bai province was hardest-hit typhoon Damrey. In the province, flash floods and landslides left 50 people dead or missing and 8 others injured. Damrey also destroyed 158 houses. The total loss in Yen Bai province is estimated at 96 billion VND.
Leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Yen Bai province are instructing localities to overcome consequences caused by flash floods in Van Chan district.
A sum of 2.05 billion VND was mobilised on Sept. 30, the first day of a drive launched by the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front to give aid to people in provinces that suffered heavy losses from typhoon Damrey and northern mountainous provinces stricken by recent flash floods.
